Flower Friday ~ Hydrangeas

🪻Flower Friday🪻
Hydrangeas are flowering shrubs known for their large, showy blooms in shades of blue, pink, white, or purple. They thrive in Southern climates with the right care and can be a beautiful addition to gardens.
Care Tips for Hydrangeas in the South:
1. Planting Location: Choose a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade, especially in hotter zones. Too much sun can scorch the leaves and blooms.
2. Soil: Hydrangeas prefer rich, well-draining soil. Southern clay soils may need to be amended with compost.
3. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially in hot, dry summers. Mulch helps retain moisture.
4. Pruning: Prune depending on the variety. Some bloom on old wood (like Hydrangea macrophylla), while others (like Hydrangea paniculata) bloom on new wood.
5. Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer in spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to more leaves than flowers.
6. Winter Protection: In mild Southern winters, most hydrangeas don’t need protection, but a layer of mulch helps insulate roots.
